Freedom, work and organizations in the 21st century: Freedom for whom and for whose purpose?

This article critically interrogates the meaning of freedom and its current potential relationship with social relations in around work as introduction to this special issue. interrogation is vital given neoliberalism’s evaluative promise for more individual corporate freedom, while concurrently limiting conditions experience/expression workers. Consequently, there are concerns about working “private governments”, workers being subject electronic surveillance, increasingly caught up structural disadvantages (i.e. precarious work) that contribute growing unfreedom. Rather than reproducing abstract principles issue advance a contextually sensitive emergence freedom. We explicate (i) alternative experiences (ii) conceptions (iii) modes organizing. To inspire future research, we extend these themes suggest treating pluralist/relational having capacity world-making has meaningful implications how organized whose benefit. advocate an explicit turn non-neoliberal values (e.g. collectivism, solidarity, human dignity, respect, recognition) enable relational versions can serve basis at society.
